Airbnb
How can Airbnb offer millions of places to stay without building hotels?
Airbnb grows accommodation supply by helping existing homes become bookable
A hotel company usually grows by building, buying or operating more rooms. Airbnb can grow differently. Hosts make homes, apartments and rooms available on the platform, while guests search and book them through Airbnb. This lets Airbnb offer a very large accommodation network without owning the homes itself. The difficult part is trust. A spare room is only useful supply if a host is willing to let a stranger stay there and a guest is willing to book a home they have never seen. Airbnb therefore adds identity verification, reviews, reservation screening, payments, support and AirCover around the booking. The platform scales by organizing homes that already exist and making the transaction between host and guest easier and safer.
