Platform Lesson

Booking.com sells access to travelers, but it also controls how that demand is distributed.

Booking.com is a classic accommodation marketplace rather than a hotel operator. The properties on the platform are run by independent hotels, hosts and property managers, and Booking.com says it does not own the accommodation. When a traveler books, the underlying stay is normally supplied by that accommodation provider, while Booking.com earns commission for bringing the booking and running the marketplace. The interesting part is what happens before the booking. Millions of properties cannot all appear equally prominently, so Booking.com ranks and filters them. Its default recommendation system uses many signals such as popularity, conversion, availability, pricing, reviews and service history. Booking.com also states that commission can influence ranking, although it is not one of the leading default-ranking factors. More explicitly, programs such as Preferred, Preferred Plus and Visibility Booster let eligible properties trade a higher commission for greater visibility, while sponsored placements are marked as ads. That means Booking.com operates two connected markets at once. Travelers compete for the best available stay, but accommodation providers also compete for attention inside Booking.com. A hotel can improve its position through price, availability, reviews and conversion, and in some programs it can also give up more margin to gain more visibility. The platform therefore does more than connect supply and demand: its ranking rules help decide how demand is distributed among providers. Connectivity partners are the most important external Partner role in this model because they make that huge supply base manageable. Channel managers and property-management systems synchronize rooms, rates, availability, content and reservations between accommodation systems and Booking.com. They are not merely background IT suppliers; they are part of the distribution architecture that lets millions of independently operated properties stay bookable in near real time.
