Platform Lesson

Trust is marketplace infrastructure

eBay's scale is not valuable simply because many buyers and sellers are present. The marketplace has to make transactions between strangers reliable enough to happen repeatedly. Reputation, seller standards, buyer protection, managed payments, payouts and seller tooling therefore sit at the center of eBay's platform architecture. With roughly 2.6 billion live listings and 136 million active buyers, the strategic asset is liquidity reinforced by trust: more selection attracts demand, but governance and transaction infrastructure determine whether that demand converts into paid trade.
