How can Etsy outsource seller operations without outsourcing the marketplace?
Seller operations can be modular without giving up the customer relationship
Etsy keeps the marketplace relationship with Buyers and Sellers while allowing independent shipping apps to plug directly into Seller operations. Those partners can import order data, create labels, synchronize shipping information and return tracking status without becoming the Seller or taking over Etsy's discovery and checkout layer. The Seller therefore gains specialist operational capability while Etsy keeps control of the market, transaction and trust interface. The platform lesson is that a marketplace can externalize parts of Provider operations as modular services without externalizing the core customer relationship.
