Platform Lesson

Facebook now combines a social graph with an AI discovery feed.

Facebook began as a social graph: you connected to people you knew and their posts filled the feed. That layer still exists, but the main Feed and Reels now also work as an AI discovery system that recommends content based on predicted interest. Meta made the split visible in 2025 by creating a Friends tab that shows only friends’ content and no recommendations. In Q4 2025, new ranking systems lifted views of organic feed and video posts by 7%. That changes the Provider side. Facebook still depends on ordinary users posting for friends and groups, but it also competes for professional creators whose content can travel far beyond their follower network. More than four million creators have earned money on Facebook since 2017, and Facebook paid creators nearly $3 billion in 2025. Marketers then pay to reach the attention created by this mix of relationships and recommendations. The platform lesson is that Facebook now runs two discovery systems in the same product. The social graph supplies identity, relationships and community; AI ranking can distribute a post to strangers who are predicted to care. The strategic challenge is to gain the engagement of an interest-based feed without losing the friend-based network that made Facebook distinctive.

PerspectiveFieldValueExplanation
Core Value UnitCore Value UnitPostThe core value unit is a piece of content placed into Facebook’s distribution system: a text post, photo, video, Reel, Story or other shareable post that can reach friends, followers or people selected by recommendation systems.
OwnerActorMetaMeta Platforms owns and operates Facebook. This case models only Facebook’s Feed and Reels social-discovery layer, so the Owner governs Facebook’s ranking, creator rules, moderation and advertising inventory rather than the whole Meta product family.
OwnerJobKeep AttentionFacebook has to keep people returning for relationships, communities and content while making the feed useful even when a user’s friend graph alone does not provide enough interesting material.
OwnerGainAds / GrowthMore useful discovery increases time, engagement and ad opportunities, while creator monetization can attract more supply of original content.
OwnerPainTrust / RelevanceFacebook must balance recommendation quality, social relevance, spam, impersonation, harmful content and regulatory pressure without making the product feel disconnected from real relationships.
OwnerTransactionRank / MonetizeFacebook receives content, relationship and engagement signals, ranks posts into personalized feeds and monetizes part of that attention with advertising.
← Consumer · Attention / SignalsUsers contribute attention, reactions, follows, hides, shares and relationship signals that Facebook uses to personalize ranking.
→ Consumer · Feed / RecsFacebook returns a personalized mix of connected content and AI-recommended posts, while also offering friend-only and other dedicated surfaces.
← Provider · Posts / ReelsCreators and ordinary users supply the content that Facebook can distribute through Feed, Reels, Groups and related surfaces.
→ Provider · Reach / PayoutFacebook provides distribution, audience feedback, creator tools and, for eligible creators, performance-based monetization.
← Partner · Ad SpendMarketers submit budgets, objectives and creative to compete for paid distribution around user attention.
→ Partner · Reach / ResultsFacebook delivers ad impressions, clicks and conversion-oriented outcomes, together with measurement and optimization tools.
OwnerGovernanceRecommend / ModerateFacebook sets recommendation eligibility, originality rules, content standards, account enforcement, ad policies and user controls over what appears in Feed and Reels.
OwnerPromotion ChannelFeed / ReelsFacebook’s own Feed, Reels, notifications, search and sharing surfaces distribute content and pull people back into the network.
OwnerActivitiesRank / ProtectCore activities include content ranking, recommendation, moderation, integrity enforcement, creator monetization, ad delivery and experimentation with feed design.
OwnerResourcesGraph / ModelsFacebook relies on the social graph, content corpus, engagement signals, creator ecosystem, advertiser demand and large-scale AI ranking and ads systems.
ConsumerActorUsersConsumers are people who open Facebook to connect with people they know, participate in communities and discover posts, videos and Reels. The same person can later become a Provider by publishing content.
ConsumerJobConnect / DiscoverUsers want to stay connected with people and communities they care about while also finding interesting content beyond their existing network.
ConsumerGainRelevant ContentA useful feed mixes social updates, community posts and recommendations that feel timely and personally relevant without requiring the user to search for everything.
ConsumerPainNoise / ControlUsers can face repetitive recommendations, spam, unwanted content, misinformation, addictive design concerns and uncertainty about why particular posts appear.
ConsumerTransactionView / ReactUsers contribute attention and behavioral signals through viewing, liking, commenting, sharing, following, hiding and messaging around content.
→ Owner · Attention / SignalsUsers contribute attention, reactions, follows, hides, shares and relationship signals that Facebook uses to personalize ranking.
← Owner · Feed / RecsFacebook returns a personalized mix of connected content and AI-recommended posts, while also offering friend-only and other dedicated surfaces.
ConsumerFilterFeed / FriendsThe main Feed mixes connected and recommended content, while the dedicated Friends tab provides a friend-only view without recommended content.
ConsumerAccess ChannelApp / WebPeople enter through the Facebook app or website and move among Feed, Reels, Groups, Friends and other Facebook surfaces.
ConsumerActivitiesBrowse / EngageUsers scroll, watch, react, comment, share, follow, join groups, hide content and tune recommendations through their behavior and controls.
ConsumerResourcesProfile / SignalsUsers contribute identity and relationship data, follows, interests, engagement history, device and activity signals that help Facebook personalize distribution.
ProviderActorCreatorsProviders include ordinary users, group members, Pages and professional creators who publish the posts that Facebook distributes. “Creators” is used as an umbrella term because the same user can consume content in one moment and supply it in the next.
ProviderJobReach PeopleCreators want their posts to reach friends, communities, followers or new audiences and, for professional creators, potentially generate income.
ProviderGainReach / EarningsRecommendation can distribute strong content beyond an existing follower graph, while monetization programs can turn qualified views and engagement into creator income.
ProviderPainLow ReachCreators face ranking uncertainty, changing recommendation rules, spam competition, impersonation and the risk that unoriginal or policy-violating content is deprioritized or demonetized.
ProviderTransactionCreate / PublishCreators upload posts and Reels, add context or metadata and make them eligible for distribution to connected or recommended audiences.
→ Owner · Posts / ReelsCreators and ordinary users supply the content that Facebook can distribute through Feed, Reels, Groups and related surfaces.
← Owner · Reach / PayoutFacebook provides distribution, audience feedback, creator tools and, for eligible creators, performance-based monetization.
ProviderFilterOriginality / SafetyFacebook evaluates recommendation eligibility, originality, policy compliance, spam signals and integrity risks before or after distribution.
ProviderAccess ChannelProfile / PageSupply enters through personal profiles, Professional Mode, Pages, Groups and creator publishing tools.
ProviderActivitiesCreate / EngageCreators produce posts, photos, video and Reels, respond to audiences, manage communities and use performance or monetization tools.
ProviderResourcesPosts / AudienceCreators contribute original content, voice, expertise, community relationships and existing follower or group audiences.
PartnerActorMarketersMarketers are the commercial side that pays Facebook for access to user attention. They are modelled as Partner rather than Provider because they do not supply the core Post that users come to consume; they fund the platform by buying targeted ad distribution around that content.
PartnerJobReach BuyersMarketers want to reach likely customers efficiently, measure outcomes and turn Facebook attention into awareness, leads, app activity or sales.
PartnerGainTarget / SalesFacebook combines audience signals, AI ranking and ad auctions to help marketers find relevant audiences and optimize toward business outcomes.
PartnerPainCost / SignalsAdvertisers face auction competition, changing privacy rules, measurement limits, creative fatigue and uncertainty about incremental performance.
PartnerTransactionBuy AttentionMarketers submit campaigns, creative, budgets and objectives; Facebook auctions and distributes ads into eligible attention opportunities.

← Owner · Reach / ResultsFacebook delivers ad impressions, clicks and conversion-oriented outcomes, together with measurement and optimization tools.
PartnerFilterPolicy / AuctionAds must meet policy and eligibility rules, then compete in auctions where predicted value, quality and advertiser bids shape delivery.
