"title": "Instagram now has two distribution engines: AI recommendations and private sharing.",
"text": "Instagram began as a follower-based photo network, but its growth loop now works differently. Meta says Instagram has 3 billion monthly active users, while Reels and messaging are driving much of its growth. Messaging has become the most popular way people share photos and videos on Instagram, and Reels are reshared more than 4.5 billion times a day across Meta platforms.\n\nCreators therefore no longer depend only on followers. Trial Reels can be shown to non-followers first, and Meta said that by Q4 2025, 75% of Instagram recommendations in the US came from original posts. A Reel can be discovered by a stranger through AI ranking, then forwarded privately to friends through DMs or redistributed through reposts.\n\nThe platform lesson is that Instagram now combines algorithmic discovery with social distribution. The follower graph still matters, but it is no longer the only path to reach: Instagram can create an audience first and let people carry the content through their own relationships afterwards."
