"title": "Lime owns much of the supply that makes the platform work",
"text": "Uber and Turo depend on independent drivers or car owners to bring vehicles onto their marketplaces. Lime works differently. It designs its own e-scooters and e-bikes, operates a large vehicle fleet and uses its own software to decide which vehicles need charging, repair or repositioning. That means Lime can control more of the rider experience, but it also has to pay for vehicles and run the physical operation behind every ride. Cities are another important part of the model because Lime can only operate where local authorities allow shared vehicles and set rules for parking, safety and fleet size. The case shows that a digital platform does not always need an independent seller or driver on the supply side. It can own the assets itself and use software to coordinate them at city scale."
