Rakuten Ichiba
Why does Rakuten connect shopping, payments, travel and mobile with the same points?
Rakuten makes its marketplace part of a larger points ecosystem
Rakuten Ichiba connects shoppers with more than 50,000 merchants, but the marketplace does not end when a purchase is complete. The same Rakuten ID and Rakuten Points are used across many other Rakuten services, including payments, travel, banking and mobile. This gives shoppers more places to earn and use points and gives Rakuten more reasons to bring the same customer back across its services. External partners can make that loop even wider. In 2026, FamilyMart became the first company outside the Rakuten Group to join Rakuten Ichiba's Super Points Up program, linking purchases at its roughly 16,000 convenience stores with rewards on Rakuten Ichiba. The case shows how a marketplace can become more useful when its loyalty system connects shopping with services people use elsewhere in their daily lives.
