Tripadvisor
How does Tripadvisor make money from reviews it does not write?
On Tripadvisor, travelers can be both the customer and the supplier.
This case models Tripadvisor’s travel-guidance layer, not the whole Tripadvisor Group. The core Tripadvisor product is still built around traveler reviews, ratings, photos and business listings that help people decide where to stay, eat or what to do. The company also operates a bookable experiences marketplace through Tripadvisor and Viator, but that is a different transaction layer. In fact, Tripadvisor simplified the guidance platform further at the start of 2026 by removing vacation rentals, flights and rental cars from Tripadvisor itself. The unusual part is who supplies the information that makes the platform useful. Tripadvisor does not write the reviews. Travelers do. A person can therefore use the platform in two different roles: first as a Consumer reading other people’s experiences, and later as a Provider by contributing a first-hand review, rating or photo. Tripadvisor turns those contributions into structured pages and rankings. Its organic Popularity Ranking is driven by review quality, recency, quantity and consistency, while review rules prohibit businesses from manipulating ratings with biased or incentivized content. Businesses form the commercial Partner side of this model. Hotels, restaurants, attractions and other travel businesses can claim listings, update information, respond to reviews and, in relevant categories, provide rates or purchase advertising. Tripadvisor can then monetize the high-intent audience created by its review corpus through hotel metasearch referrals, media advertising and paid placements. Sponsored Placements are explicitly sold on a cost-per-click basis and sit alongside, rather than replacing, the organic review-based ranking. The model also shows why Tripadvisor’s strategic problem is not simply collecting more reviews. The platform now reports more than 1.35 billion reviews and contributions and more than 10 million listed travel-related businesses, yet its Hotels and Other revenue fell 21% year over year in Q2 2026 as hotel metasearch click volumes and overall traffic weakened. The transferable lesson is that user-generated content can create enormous trust and selection value, but the owner still has to retain the traveler’s attention long enough to convert that trust into commercial traffic.
Structured data behind the canvas
One fixed table for every PBMC. Transaction remains one field; its transaction flows appear directly beneath it as indented subrows, so cases remain directly comparable.
| Perspective | Field | Value | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Value Unit | Core Value Unit | Review | The core value unit is a traveler’s first-hand review and rating attached to a travel business or place. Tripadvisor aggregates these contributions into searchable pages and rankings that other travelers use to decide where to go. |
| Owner | Actor | Tripadvisor | This case models Tripadvisor’s travel-guidance and hotel-metasearch layer, not the whole Tripadvisor Group and not the separate Viator experiences marketplace. |
| Owner | Job | Build Trust | Tripadvisor has to turn a very large volume of traveler contributions into useful, credible guidance that helps people choose among travel businesses. |
| Owner | Gain | Traffic / Revenue | A trusted review corpus attracts high-intent travel planning traffic that can be monetized through hotel metasearch referrals, advertising and adjacent bookable experiences. |
| Owner | Pain | Trust / Traffic | Fake or manipulated reviews can damage trust, while changes in search behavior and weaker referral traffic can reduce the commercial value of even a very large content base. |
| Owner | Transaction | Publish / Monetize | Tripadvisor publishes and ranks user contributions for travelers, then monetizes the resulting high-intent audience through commercial traffic and advertising relationships. |

| Consumer | Gain | Trusted Advice | Travelers gain a large pool of experiences from other travelers, plus ratings, rankings, photos and comparison tools in one place. |

| Consumer | Transaction | Search / Read | Travelers submit destination or category intent, read reviews and compare ranked businesses; some then click through to a commercial partner or book an experience in a separate marketplace layer. |

| Consumer | Resources | Intent / Attention | Travelers contribute search intent, attention, preferences and click behavior that make the audience commercially valuable. |

| Provider | Job | Share Experience | Contributors want to record what happened, help other travelers and make their experience visible to the wider community. |
| Provider | Gain | Help Travelers | A published contribution can influence later traveler decisions and add to the contributor’s public profile and participation history. |
| Provider | Pain | Effort / Abuse | Writing useful first-hand content takes effort, while fake reviews, harassment or manipulation can reduce the value of genuine contributions. |
| Provider | Transaction | Review / Rate | Contributors submit a first-hand review, bubble rating and often photos about a listed business or travel experience. |

| Partner | Actor | Businesses | The Partner role is the travel-business side: hotels, restaurants, attractions, direct-booking partners and other commercial participants that maintain listings, receive traveler traffic and may buy advertising or referral exposure. |
| Partner | Job | Win Demand | Travel businesses want travelers to discover them, trust them and ultimately visit or book with them. |
| Partner | Gain | Traffic / Reputation | A strong Tripadvisor presence can generate visibility, reputation signals and qualified traffic or booking referrals. |
