Platform Lesson

Retail assets can become platform infrastructure

Walmart Marketplace is stronger than a standalone digital marketplace because it can combine third-party seller supply with assets Walmart already built for retail: consumer trust, stores, fulfillment, data, payments and advertising reach. Sellers expand assortment and generate referral-fee and advertising opportunities, while Walmart's physical and digital infrastructure can improve delivery, returns and customer confidence. The strategic challenge is to scale third-party supply without allowing seller quality, logistics or trust problems to weaken the Walmart brand that attracts demand in the first place.
