Platform Lesson

Care.com reuses the same marketplace across different kinds of care

Families do not need only one kind of care. A household may look for a babysitter, later need help for an aging parent, and also hire pet care or housekeeping. Care.com puts these needs into one marketplace instead of building a separate platform for each category. The details of each job are different, but the same basic tools can be reused: profiles, availability, rates, reviews, background checks, messaging and job posts. This makes it easier for families to return when their needs change and for Care.com to add adjacent care categories. The model also shows why trust matters so much: people are not just buying a digital service; they may be inviting someone into their home or asking them to care for a loved one.
